LAWS, Frederick William

Frederick William Laws was born in 1882 in Hunstanton, Norfolk to Robert William Laws and Maria Jarrett. He was the fourth born of their eleven children and the second eldest of the surviving seven. Hunstanton is a seaside town on the Norfolk coast and Robert Laws was Innkeeper of the Neptune Inn, later Hotel, now a Michelin starred restaurant. Frederick was a Carpenter while his sister Ethel was a School Teacher.

In 1911 Frederick Laws married Bertha Christine Umbricht who had been born in Paris to a Scottish mother and Swiss father, Jules Umbricht, a Hotel Manager. In 1911 Bertha was a Hotel Book Keeper living in Brighton, Sussex. Frederick and Bertha had three children, Barbara 1912, Robert 1915 and Peter born in London in 1917. However the family address in 1918 was Glebe Avenue, Hunstanton.

Frederick Laws enlisted in the army at King’s Lynn and in October 1918 was with the 2nd Regiment of the County of London Yeomanry, known as the Sharpshooters, which had moved to Ireland in May 1918. Returning home on leave he travelled on RMS Leinster on the 10th but did not survive the sinking. However his body was recovered and he was buried in Grangegorman Military Cemetery in Dublin.
